Milledge Park Historic District

Verity sets out to expand boundary for existing historic district.

1913 Milledge Park Plat Map

The Milledge Circle Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. At that time, the district boundary included a fraction of the originally platted suburban neighborhood. Located, adjacent to the Five Points intersection in Athens, Georgia, the district is significant for its architecture, community planning and development, and landscape architecture.

The planned development is an example of a garden suburb, the only one of its kind in Athens. The original plat for the neighborhood was completed in 1913 and known as Milledge Park. Verity is working to ensure that all areas represented on the original plat map are included in the National Register district. Boundary expansion nominations involve a considerable amount of additional information to show what was missed in the past. For Milledge Park, the 1985 nomination had a period of significance from the 1910s to the 1930s. The boundary expansion examines the developmental history of the garden suburb from 1935 to 1950, analyzing and documenting the importance of this period for Milledge Park.

The overall street pattern, built environment, and landscape have not been noticeably altered since the early twentieth century. Verity is excited for the opportunity to fully document the district and have its history be represented in the National Register.
